Dzerzhinsky asked what had gone wrong, and Haskell gave a long list of the troubles he’d been experiencing with Eiduk. For every complaint Eiduk had an excuse, and for every excuse Haskell had a letter or telegram or some other document to refute Eiduk’s lies. Dzerzhinsky became irate at his subordinate. With a tone of voice Haskell had never heard before in his life and, as he recalled, “a look in his eyes calculated to inspire fear,” Dzerzhinsky remarked, “Comrade Eiduk, you have been deceiving me all through this conference.” Eiduk began to quake, then froze in his chair, unable to speak. Now certain where the fault lay, Dzerzhinsky told Haskell he would see that the railcars would start moving again, and they did: within two weeks, the worst of the crisis had passed.

Eiduk lost Dzerzhinsky’s favor, and in June he was replaced by another GPU agent, fellow Latvian Karl Lander, a longtime Bolshevik and hardened revolutionary remembered for unleashing a reign of terror in the northern Caucasus during the civil war that included the execution of thousands of Cossacks.
